Greenwood and Gomes start, Predicted Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1) to face Tranmere Rovers

Manchester United are scheduled to face League One side Tranmere Rovers in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday. The Red Devils have recently suffered successive Premier League defeats but they should still be overwhelming favourites for the weekend’s game at Prenton Park.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

Sergio Romero has been the regular choice for the Cup competitions this term and the Argentine is expected to start in goal ahead of David de Gea. The former Sampdoria man has impressed between the sticks this season with seven clean sheets from nine appearances.

There should be a complete overhaul of the defence from the midweek defeat to Burnley. Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw are expected to feature in the right and left-back positions respectively. Victor Lindelof, who has recovered from his illness, should partner Eric Bailly at the heart of the backline. Bailly is likely to make his first competitive appearance for the club since April 2019 after recovering from another knee injury setback.

In the centre of the park, Solskjaer may prefer to go with youth and experience. Nemanja Matic should get the nod over Fred, who may be offered a breather, having been ever-present for the club in the Premier League since early October. In the absence of Fred, James Garner should get a rare starting chance after recovering from an injury of his own.

Further forward, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong could feature in the wide attacking roles. The duo have experience of playing Tranmere from the EFL trophy second round game last month where Chong scored a first-half brace in a 3-2 defeat. Alongside the pair, Jesse Lingard is likely to slot into the number 10 position. Mason Greenwood is expected to lead the line after featuring off the bench in recent league games.
