‘Good news’: Erik ten Hag provides fresh injury update on Man Utd midfielder Scott McTominay

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Scott McTominay is making good progress from his injury and could make his return to first-team action soon.

The Scotland international was superb during the last international break with four goals. He carried over the form to United, scoring in the 2-0 win over Everton on April 8.

However, the midfielder picked up an injury in training before the Sevilla game and he has subsequently missed eight matches for the Red Devils across all competitions.

McTominay is not expected to be involved against Wolves this afternoon but Ten Hag has acknowledged that he is ‘close’ and has made ‘really good steps’ in his rehabilitation progress.

He told Manutd.com: “It’s good news that Scott is on the way back. He’s made really good steps. He’s close, but not close enough to make the selection for [today].”

McTominay’s return should benefit the Red Devils

McTominay started the season as an undisputed starter from the number six role but lost his place to Casemiro after his poor showing in the Manchester derby defeat in October.

The 26-year-old has since been a squad player for the Red Devils but he could have a key role to play in the coming weeks. McTominay’s defensive qualities could be useful off the bench.

United have another three league games after the Wolves clash aside from the FA Cup final against City. Ten Hag will be hoping that McTominay is available for the Bournemouth trip.

The Red Devils need a maximum of three wins from their final four league games to seal their Champions League spot. They will be aiming to end a two-match losing streak today.
