‘Good news’: Erik ten Hag confirms Man Utd defender is available for selection vs Brentford

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed a huge fitness boost ahead of the Premier League clash against Brentford at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are on a five-match winless streak in all competitions and have the opportunity to end the wretched run in Saturday’s afternoon kick-off.

In today’s pre-match presser, Ten Hag confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire are sidelined for a couple of weeks after picking up muscle injuries at Aston Villa.

However, there was good news on Noussair Mazraoui, who was substituted at half-time against Villa.

The £135,000 per week star underwent a minor heart procedure as he was experiencing palpitations and it was initially suggested that he could be sidelined for weeks.

He has now been deemed fit to participate in full training ahead of the Brentford game and should start in his customary right-back role in tomorrow’s encounter.

Ten Hag said via United’s official website: “Kobbie and Harry are out for a couple of weeks [but] Mazraoui is good news. He faced an illness but he returned on the training pitch and he’s available for selection tomorrow.”

Defensive injuries have been a concern for United since last season. They are currently without a fit specialist left-back with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined.

Diogo Dalot has operated as the makeshift left-back from the start of the campaign and the Portuguese should keep his place with Mazraoui fit to feature.

There were suggestions that Jonny Evans could make a surprise start at left-back with Dalot on the right. This is unlikely to happen with Mazraoui available.

United are six points adrift of the top four after just seven league games. Saturday’s clash against Brentford is a must-win to stay alive in the Champions League race.
