According to Sky Sports’ journalist, Gary Cotterill in Germany, Manchester United are on the verge of losing the race for their no.1 transfer target in Jadon Sancho.
The transfer window is set to close on 5th October. Considering that, United currently have three more days to complete a signing that they have had desired ever since securing the Champions League football on the final day of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign.
Speaking to the German media on Saturday, Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc again made it clear that Jadon Sancho would stay put at Dortmund for the upcoming season.
He said:
“Yes there was contact with Manchester United. But it’s all said and clear. Jadon will stay here and there will be no change in the next three days.”
Sky Sports News’ reporter Gary Cotterill, on the other hand, claimed:
“Everybody at Dortmund – the sporting director, the head coach, the press officer, the fans and certainly the media – have said it all along [that Sancho is staying].
“The media have told me they are not even following the story. I’m afraid to say that yes, it is the end of the road of Jadon Sancho to Old Trafford.”
United have already made contacts with Ousmane Dembele‘s entourage and Barcelona in order to sign the Frenchman on loan for the 2020-21 season. Dembele might finally fill the shoes that once was thought to be made for Jadon Sancho.
Our take
United took a faulty approach to undermine Dortmund’s valuation of Sancho and now paying the price as they are not going to sign their #1 target. The Red Devils need width on the pitch and depth on the bench. They have none.
United compete in four competitions this season – Premier League, EFL Cup, Carabao Cup and the Champions League. The squad will be put to test against the best teams and United have only two traditional wingers – Marcus Rashford and Dan James.
They desperately needed Sancho. Mason Greenwood could play on the right – but cannot match what Sancho could deliver. Rashford is an injury-prone player too. Dark clouds surround Old Trafford.
United need to sign reinforcements in January if they progress in the cup competitions to remain relevant.
