Manchester United are scheduled to face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in their first Premier League game after the international break. The Red Devils picked up a comfortable 3-1 triumph over Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this month and that propelled them to the seventh position in the standings after 12 matches.
Still, they are nine points behind the final Champions League spot and can’t afford any slip-ups as they head into a congested festive schedule. United have recently impressed upfront with both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford finding form, but they will be up against a Sheffield side, which has conceded just nine times this term.
Predicted Lineup:
David de Gea has played through every minute of the club’s Premier League campaign. The Spaniard was left frustrated during the international break where he failed to represent his nation but there are no such concerns at United, where he is the undisputed choice in goal.
In the defence, Solskjaer should go with the familiar combination. Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire should take up the central defensive positions with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Ashley Young in the full-back roles. Brandon Williams impressed in his maiden league start against Brighton when Young was suspended but the latter is mostly expected to reclaim his left-back spot.
In the centre of the park, there could be an enforced change with Scott McTominay yet to overcome the ankle injury picked up against Brighton before the international break. Nemanja Matic has returned to training but his involvement remains a doubt due to the lack of fitness following his injury. In this case, James Garner could be handed with his maiden Premier League start alongside Fred.
Further forward, Solskjaer will most likely stick with the same attacking combination from recent games. Marcus Rashford and Daniel James should slot into their wide attacking roles with Andreas Pereira in the number 10 position while Anthony Martial will definitely lead the line. Pereira’s performances have come under scrutiny of late due to his average distribution but the goal versus Brighton has probably cemented his starting role for the time being.
