Frenkie de Jong open to joining Man Utd as they near agreement with Barcelona

Netherlands midfielder Frenkie de Jong has given the green light to join Manchester United as they edge closer to finalising a transfer deal with Barcelona, Sport claims (today’s edition, page 4).

The Red Devils have been in regular negotiations with the Catalan giants over the past few weeks, and they now appear on the cusp of making a breakthrough for De Jong’s transfer.

A package worth €80 million (£69m) is likely to be finalised between the clubs, and it is reported that a ‘definitive agreement’ is being elucidated so that he can make his switch to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, a separate update from Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth reveals that the club are finalising a ‘broad agreement’ and could pay around €65m (£56m) upfront for the former Ajax star.

Our view:

De Jong has been the priority target for Erik ten Hag since his appointment as United’s manager. The entire focus has been placed on signing him this summer, and a deal now seems on the verge of completion.

There were initially suggestions that De Jong was not open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford, but that no longer seems a concern with the 25-year-old also eyeing a reunion with his former Ajax boss.

It is now left to the clubs to agree on transfer terms. It could possibly happen by June 30 if the Blaugrana want to include the fees from De Jong’s sale into their accounts for the previous financial year (2021-22).

Meanwhile, the arrival of De Jong at Old Trafford should see United intensify their focus on other main targets. It has been suggested that they are interested in Ajax duo Antony and Lisandro Martinez.

However, Arsenal are also strongly chasing the signature of the latter and they are in advanced negotiations with a second bid recently made. United’s slow progress on De Jong could end up costing them Martinez’s services.
