Frenkie de Jong informs Erik ten Hag that he does not want to join Man Utd

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has informed manager Erik ten Hag that he does not want to join Manchester United this summer, Spanish outlet Sport claim (today’s edition, page 10).

The Red Devils have identified the Dutchman as their prime midfield target under the recommendation of Ten Hag, and they have already agreed a deal worth £71 million with the Blaugrana.

However, the 25-year-old has no desire of leaving the Catalan giants. He is only willing to consider a departure if his deferred wages are paid, but a move to Old Trafford is not appealing to him.

De Jong does not want to join a club without Champions League football while the idea of living in Manchester does not seduce him. He has informed the same to the Red Devils boss.

Sport claim that the door is ‘absolutely closed’ and ‘except for a miracle’, De Jong seems unlikely to reunite with his former Ajax manager. It is suggested that he would prefer to join Chelsea instead.

Man Utd need to look at De Jong alternatives

United have spent two months in the pursuit of De Jong, and they have now suffered a potential blow with the midfielder in no mood to consider a move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils’ hierarchy have backed the manager with trips to Barcelona to negotiate for the player, but there is nothing they can do if the Dutchman continues to resist a move.

The club have not given up on him , but it could be time to look at alternatives in the transfer market. They would not want to wait until late August for Chelsea to hijack the deal.

The Blues are yet to make a formal approach for his services, but there are suggestions that they could enter the hunt if the Blaugrana are willing to reduce their asking price for the player.

United should be wary of such a situation. They should begin the search for back-up options. Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz could be possible choices for the club.
