Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish opened up about his new contract and a failed move to Manchester United.
The midfielder signed a new contract extension for five more years.
His contract extension poured cold water over the intense speculations regarding his move to Old Trafford. The rumours have been going around well before the previous Premier League season ended.
The midfielder talked to Sky Sports regarding all of this.
This is what he had to say: “Yeah, I suppose so. I had a good season last season and there was interest in myself from other clubs.”
“But I truly believe everything happens for a reason. Now I’ve signed a new contract at Aston Villa and I’ve got the biggest smile on my face.”
Grealish said that the new deal was agreed just a day before it was announced.
He added: “Saying that I’ve always wanted to stay, it’s Aston Villa – a club that’s close to me and my family”.
“There’s been speculation through the summer. On Saturday I had a Facetime call with the owner and he said what his ambitions are for this season and it persuaded me if anything”.
Manchester United were seriously interested in bringing Grealish to the Old Trafford but, the deal took a back-seat due to his high transfer fees and United’s obsession with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
Grealish was valued at €80m by Aston Villa.
The repeated setbacks in the Sancho deal did force Manchester United to focus elsewhere, but they preferred to sign Ajax midfielder Donny Van De Beek for a lesser price instead.
Grealish’s decision to stay at Aston Villa is a big boost for the Midlands club but it does not bode well for Manchester United. The Reds have had a sub-par performance in the transfer market. The failure to sign top targets could hurt the club badly.
With United’s rivals focusing intently on improving their squads, the Red Devils will have to ask difficult questions of themselves if they want to make a significant leap this season.
