Owen Hargreaves, the former Manchester United midfielder and current television pundit for BT sport has strongly recommended Manchester United to look into signing Thiago Alcantara before arch-rivals Liverpool close the deal.
Liverpool dominated the Premier League this season, wrapping up their first league title since 1990 by finishing the campaign on an astonishing 99 points. Although, history has taught us that defending champions can’t afford to sit still. They must strengthen while they’re on top or they risk allowing their rivals to close the gap.
The 29-year old Spaniard has been strongly linked with English champions. Owen while addressing the BT sport viewers said, “They (Liverpool) don’t have him (a player like him). On his day, he’s one of the top five midfielders in the world, I think as good as Liverpool are he walks into their starting XI.”
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s match, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was hopeful Thiago would remain at the club next season.
“I hope that it won’t be one of the last matches of Thiago,” Neuer said.
“He’s a very valuable player for us, especially in ball possession. He’s very important for us. He’s our engine in midfield actually.”
While he is being offered to the Merseyside giants for as cheap as £30 million, Owen believes he will be a perfect fit for Manchester United. Despite United midfield being starred by Bruno Fernandes and Pogba, Thiago will be able to add an extra layer of creative genius in the team’s playmaking department. Owen further added, “At the Bridge, we were blown away by him. I think everybody needs him. Man United, Arsenal, anybody would take him. He’s one of those players, if you played with him, you’d be blown away by how good he is.”
Thiago not only runs the show with his supreme range of passing but also manages to win back possession in defensive positions superbly.
United tried to sign Thiago from Barcelona before he made the switch to Bayern in 2013 which means he has been on the team’s radar for quite a long time.
However, it is being speculated in the English markets that United currently are prioritizing a deal for Jordan Sancho over any other business.
If United are to close in on the Spaniard and make him sign a deal before their adversaries, this transfer could go down in the history books as one of the most brazen hijacks in top-flight English football.
