Fjortoft claims Manchester United want 22-year-old who’ll leave next summer

German football expert Jan Aage Fjortoft has claimed on Twitter that Manchester United are competing with Liverpool and Manchester City for Dayot Upamecano.

Fjortoft, who played for Rapid Wien, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Eintracht Frankfurt among other clubs, has said that Bayern are also interested in securing the services of the 22-year-old central defender.

The former Norway international centre-forward has added that the France international will leave RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021.

Dayot Upamecano is a quality defender

Upamecano is a very talented and promising young defender who has progressed a lot in recent years.

The 22-year-old centre-back has established himself as one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga and also has experience of playing in the Champions League.

The youngster is a very skill player who is good on the ball, reads the game well, is mature at the back, and is strong and powerful.

Upamecano has earned three caps for France, and it is very likely that in the coming years, he will establish himself as a key figure for his national team.

Upamecano has scored one goal in seven Bundesliga appearances and has played thrice in the Champions League for Leipzig so far this season.

During the 2019-20 campaign, the Frenchman made 27 starts and one substitute appearance in the Bundesliga and played eight times in the Champions League.

Would Dayot Upamecano make Manchester United better?

United could do with a quality new central defender, but as we discussed last week, it is unlikely that the Red Devils will be able to sign a world-class player in the middle of the season.

Harry Maguire is a good defender and so so is Victor Lindelof, but Upamecano would be a big upgrade on them and would make United a much stronger team at the back.
