Fernandes and Mata start, Predicted Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1) vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Manchester United are scheduled to entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford in their final Premier League match before the mid-season break. The Red Devils go into the game with back-to-back victories in the Cup competitions and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping that his side can maintain the momentum with a win over Wolves on Sunday.

Solskjaer’s side are already six points behind the top four after successive league defeats in the backend of January but the arrival of Bruno Fernandes should boost their prospects of beating Wolves, who have proved a bogey club for them in the past.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Predicted Lineup:

David de Gea had probably his best game of the campaign in the midweek League Cup encounter against Manchester City where he made four brilliant saves. He has been ever-present in the Premier League and is expected to start against Nuno’s side.

In the defence, Solskjaer should revert to the traditional 4-2-3-1 formation. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are definite choices at the heart of the backline. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is likewise expected to start at right-back. Brandon Williams has been the preferred choice for the left-back role ahead of Luke Shaw in recent months and he should keep his spot, having restricted Adama Traore to zero shots in the FA Cup meetings last month.

Nemanja Matic is definitely unavailable for the game after his sending off during the midweek League Cup clash. In this case, Fred could be accompanied by his compatriot Andreas Pereira in the centre of the park, given both Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay are yet to return after their respective injury setbacks.

Further forward, Bruno Fernandes may be handed with a start on his Manchester United debut. Solskjaer refused to confirm whether the Portuguese would begin the game but in our prediction, the 25-year-old definitely gets the nod for the number 10 role over Jesse Lingard, who has been pretty poor this term and has not registered a goal or an assist in the league for 13 months.

Elsewhere, Daniel James and Juan Mata could feature on the left and right wing respectively after their substitute appearances in the midweek Manchester derby. The combination of Mata and Fernandes could be relishing to watch against a Wolves side, who generally like to sit back and defend. Anthony Martial should continue to lead the line. The Frenchman will have more competition in the coming games with Odion Ighalo expected to be registered as a United player this weekend.
