Sir Alex Ferguson will help Manchester United’s board in deciding Louis Van Gaal’s future and to choose the Dutchman’s potential successor.
With the United manager increasingly under pressure, the board is said to be considering his future, particularly given Jose Mourinho is available after being fired by Chelsea, while Pep Guardiola confirmed he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
According to the Daily Mirror, Fergie and David Gill met the board on Monday, after it transpired Joel and Avram Glazer left the decision in the hands of Ed Woodward.
The Mirror suggests that “Fergie is a key figure in the discussions. He is a good friend of van Gaal and a fan of Mourinho and feels he could control the controversial boss’s excesses, but he also believes United shouldn’t become a sacking club.”
Mourinho has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford following his departure from Chelsea, but the Portuguese manager looks to have attracted interest from his former club, Real Madrid, where Rafa Benitez has enjoyed a bumpy ride so far.
