‘Fans will be happy’ – Bruno Fernandes takes a cheeky dig after Liverpool miss out on Champions League football

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes says the club’s fans will be delighted to see Liverpool miss out on qualification for the Champions League.

The Red Devils registered a dominant 4-1 victory over Chelsea tonight to secure their place in Europe’s elite competition.

Fernandes, one of the four goalscorers for United, was delighted to have cemented a top-four finish.

He said (via the Mirror): “We know that means a lot – for us, it’s about getting our goals completed so we did.”

“Obviously, we knew they [the fans] would be happy for Liverpool not to be there but for us it’s not about that – it’s getting the best we can for ourselves because we have to look after ourselves.

Liverpool’s misery makes Chelsea drubbing sweeter

Returning to the Champions League will earn extra funds for United and enable them to attract elite players in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Erik ten Hag’s arrival last summer felt like a breath of fresh air, but that changed soon after United started their campaign with back-to-back defeats against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Since then, the Red Devils have improved. Ten Hag has done a great job in signing the right players last summer who have raised the team’s standards.

Participating in the Champions League should be the minimum requirement for a club as big as Man United.

The Red Devils looked destined to make it into the top four spots, but Liverpool’s late seven-match winning run made matters interesting.

United could have confirmed their place last weekend when Aston Villa came close to beating Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield. However, Roberto Firmino’s late strike against the Villians kept them in contention.

Fernandes knows that the result will feel even sweeter to the fans as they were able to deny Liverpool a place in Europe’s premier competition.
