Ander Herrera has praised Louis Van Gaal as a very demanding manager, adding his relationship with the Manchester United manager remains positive, even though the Spaniard has often been overlooked for selection.
Despite impressing when given the chance, Herrera has struggled to secure a spot in the starting XI given Van Gaal’s preference for adopting a system that includes two holding midfielders. However, the former Athletic Bilbao man said the Dutchman was the right man to take United onto the next level as the players clearly enjoy working with him.
“He’s a very demanding person, very forward and very sincere, which I value a lot,” he explained.
“To you guys (the press), he might seem a bit tough, but I think he’s a good guy and I think he wants what’s best for the club. On a personal level, I have a very good relationship with him.
“I know he can look tough from outside the club, but from within, he’s the right guy to help us improve.”
After a somewhat difficult start to his United career, Herrera shone in the second half of last season, as United produced their best football under Van Gaal by winning six games in a row, including wins against City and Liverpool. The Spaniard has seized his opportunity this season, scoring twice in eight Premier League appearances so far, despite starting only five of those games.
