Fabrizio Romano: United have not offered a contract to Pogba – decision in 6-7 months

In Episode 14 of Here We Go podcast, Fabrizio Romano provided updates on talks regarding Paul Pogba’s contract extension.

Romano confirms that United haven’t given any official offer to the Frenchman. The Red Devils have initiated the talks, but things have stalled since then.

He also adds that Pogba has to make a decision in 6-7 months, ie, next summer.

Most recently, United triggered a one-year extension in Pogba’s contract which binds him to the club until 2022. However, Pogba’s future is uncertain at United and it hinges both on United’s performance in the league (and Europe) as well as potential demand for the player.

Days before the one-year extension, Pogba publicly expressed his desire to play for Real Madrid in his career. This fueled media’s interest in him and he’s become the center of attention attracting bad press.

Since joining United for a club-record fee in 2016, Pogba hasn’t been consistent. Comparatively, Bruno Fernandes has had more impact in significantly lesser time.

Pogba’s previous club Juventus are interested in him too. Juve boss Andrea Pirlo regards him as the ‘dream’ signing.

Romano’s comments make sense. If Pogba decides to stay, an extension should be signed before the summer transfer window opens. If not, Pogba should find a new club real soon as his contract will have a 12-month expiry date in the summer. There is a chance United could be bullied by the buying club.

It’s also important to recall that Pogba reportedly told his teammates he’d leave United earlier this year in February and was on the verge of leaving the club. In February, the Euros had not been postponed yet and it’s reasonable to assume that Pogba was looking for a stellar series of performances with his national team to elevate his profile and engineer a move out of Old Trafford.

With the Euros now being played next season, that will be Pogba’s chance to shine the spotlight on himself.

And wherever he goes next, the question will remain – why not do the same at United? One ‘great’ season, or two ‘excellent’ ones would have immediately put him in the shop window (not to mention changed United’s fortunes as well).

Pogba seems to be loving playing the world-class midfielder as opposed to actually being one. It’s a shame.
