As per Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United were targeting Fiorentina winger Federico Chiesa for a very long time. United contacted Chiesa’s agents but he refused to move away from Italy. Romano further adds that Chiesa had an agreement with Juventus for over a year. And a deal worth €50m was agreed on the deadline day between Fiorentina and Juventus. [source: Here We Go podcast]
Chiesa would have been a fantastic signing for United if they’d have convinced him to come to Manchester. The 23-year-old winger was not going to sign a contract extension which ends in 2022 and it was a great opportunity.
Chiesa, who plays primarily on the right flank, would have been United’s missing piece in the attacking puzzle. United failed to sign their #1 Sancho and his alternatives Douglas Costa, Ismaila Sarr, and Ousmane Dembele.
Instead United made two new young signings in Amad Traore and Facundo Pellistri. However, a lack of a senior right-winger might haunt Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
