In his latest episode of the Here We Go podcast, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Manchester United’s secret transfer which didn’t take place.
During the transfer window, United were linked with three main left-backs: Ben Chilwell, Sergio Reguilon, and Alex Telles.
United has already lost Chilwell and Reguilon to Chelsea and Spurs respectively when they open talks with Telles. Telles was going to be a free agent next summer – therefore United didn’t match Porto’s asking price.
Reportedly, there were some agent fees and a payment to Telles’ former club Galatasaray which caused Porto to demand a higher fee than what United expected.
The deal wasn’t confirmed until the eleventh hour after a series of lengthy negotiations. Reports also suggested United could opt-out of the deal.
United had a backup option on their mind. Romano reveals it was Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri. After Chilwell’s arrival, Emerson became a third-choice left-back and the Blues wanted to get rid of him.
United have dealt with Chelsea before for Juan Mata and Nemanja Matic and this deal could’ve taken place.
Luckily for United, Porto reached an agreement for Telles and the Reds got him for a cheap £15.4m.
