Manchester United striker Chido Obi is poised to join Eredivisie outfit Willem II on a season-long loan deal, according to reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the best graduates in the United academy, and he now requires consistent first-team football to further his development.
Feyenoord would have been an ideal outfit for him due to their Champions League presence, but that seems unlikely before the Dutch transfer deadline tonight.
Willem II have instead reached a verbal loan agreement with United, as per Voetbal International, and Romano reports that United have authorised a medical for Obi.
Obi should benefit from regular senior football
The young striker joined the Red Devils from Arsenal two years ago. He had his breakthrough season under former manager Ruben Amorim, making eight appearances in 2024/25.
However, Obi did not make a single senior appearance last term. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee shared the minutes in the number nine role.
With Marcus Rashford having rejoined the club after his loan stint at Barcelona, United have another striking option, which means Obi may struggle for senior minutes once more.
Hence, a temporary move to Willem II looks the right choice for him. Obi netted 20 goals in 37 games for the development sides last season and has the chance to prove his worth in the Eredivisie.
Willem II are one of the favourites to be relegated from the Dutch top-flight. The United wonderkid could play a pivotal role in preserving their Eredivisie status beyond the current campaign.
The Red Devils are bound to monitor his progress in the coming months. If Willem II get dragged into a deep relegation tussle, they could consider recalling Obi in January regardless of his progress.
The club previously did so with Harry Amass despite his successful loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
