Manchester United Under-18s suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Youth Cup final on Thursday evening.
Both Pep Guardiola and Michael Carrick were in stands to watch this high-profile encounter.
Tyrone Samba opened the scoring for the hosts with a sensational free-kick that left the goalkeeper with no chance.
City were not able to maintain their lead for long as Godwill Kukonki brought United level at the cusp of half-time.
The intensity dropped slightly after the break, with both sides becoming more cautious and unwilling to take major risks in such a high-pressure contest.
Just when the game looked destined for extra time, Reigan Heskey found the roof of the net from close range in the 87th minute.
Chido Obi nearly rescued United in the dying moments, but his late effort was dramatically cleared off the line.
Player Ratings
Cameron Byrne-Hughes – 6/10
Produced a sensational save from a point-blank range in the 24th minute. Beaten by a special free-kick from Floyd Samba and could do little about the second goal either.
Yuel Helafu – 4/10
Beaten too easily for the match-winning strike.
Albert Mills – 5/10
Struggled at times to anticipate the movement of the opposition and could have reacted quicker defensively.
Dan Armer – 6/10
Showed composure in possession and helped United build from the back with his precise ball distribution.
Godwill Kukonki – 8/10
Stepped up to bring United level with a thumping header right after the opening strike from the hosts. Defensively solid but had to be taken off due to a knock.
Rafe McCormack – 7/10
Made two crucial blocks before picking up a booking for a late challenge.
It felt like a risky decision from Darren Fletcher to substitute him at half-time, and the gamble ultimately failed to pay off.
Jim Thwaites – 7/10
Produced a superb Bruno Fernandes-esque delivery from the right flank to set up Godwill Kukonki with a superb assist.
Amir Ibragimov – 5/10
Started on the right flank before moving into a more central role after the break.
Struggled to produce the level of influence many anticipated.
Noah Ajayi – 5/10
Showed flashes of quality with his trickery and ball-carrying ability, helping United break out of their own half on the counterattack.
However, like many of his teammates, his influence faded as the game progressed.
JJ Gabriel – 5/10
Linked up nicely with Chido Obi on a few occasions in the first half and created a good opening with a clever cutback.
The 15-year-old was unfortunate to be booked for simulation. A harsh lesson early in his promising career.
Chido Obi – 4/10
Came close to scoring, but a brilliant block from a City defender denied him.
As the only player with senior experience, more was expected from Obi, who still looks short of a permanent first-team promotion.
Substitutes
Junior Brown – 5/10
Made little impact after coming on at the break.
James Overy – 6/10
Brought on too late.
