FA Cup third round draw: Man United to face Wigan Athletic

Manchester United will visit Wigan Athletic in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Red Devils were previously drawn at home in the last 12 domestic cup draws.

However, they will travel to the League One club over the weekend of January 6-7.

Man United enjoyed a fine FA Cup campaign last season but were beaten by Manchester City in the final.

No more home advantage for Man United

The clash with the Latics will be Man United’s first away tie in a domestic competition since March 2021.

The FA Cup will likely be the only tournament the Red Devils can win this season.

They are seventh in the Premier League and face a tough challenge to finish in the top four.

Newcastle United knocked them out of the League Cup last month.

They are bottom of their Champions League group with just one game remaining.

They won’t qualify for the Europa League competition if they finish last in the group.

Erik ten Hag ended Man United’s six-year barren run with the League Cup triumph last season.

He will want to grab silverware this term as well to prove the rebuild under him is going in the right direction.

The Red Devils should be favourites against Wigan. However, a positive result is not guaranteed as they have been highly inconsistent this season.

A trip to DW Stadium could be a tricky fixture, considering Wigan have not conceded a single goal in the first two rounds of the FA Cup.

Man United dominated the last meeting between the two sides. They eliminated the Latics in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win at Old Trafford in January 2017.
