Europa League Preview: Manchester United vs Omonia

Manchester United head into their fourth Europa League group game on Thursday, aiming to boost their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.

The Red Devils have bounced back from a defeat in their opening match against Real Sociedad to pick up six points from their next two outings.

However, with the La Liga outfit winning every game to date, United face the prospect of a play-off against a team dropping out of the Champions League to reach the knockout phase.

Most of the sportsbooks listed at newbettingsites still rate United as one of the favourites to win the Europa League despite their potentially tricky route to the final.

Before Erik ten Hag’s side can think about the next stage of the competition, they must concentrate on ensuring they get out of the group.

They welcome Omonia Nicosia to Old Trafford later this week aiming to keep up the pressure on Sociedad at the top of Group E.

United produced a nervy performance in the reverse fixture last week but recovered from a goal down to secure a 3-2 victory.

Marcus Rashford (2) and Anthony Martial were on the scoresheet against the Cypriot side, and both will hope to feature at Old Trafford.

However, Martial limped off with another injury after half an hour against Everton and may not recover in time to face Omonia.

Cristiano Ronaldo produced an improved display after replacing Martial and may get the chance to lead the line again on Thursday.

Ten Hag may make other changes to his starting line-up with a view to ensuring his players can cope with the upcoming schedule.

United face six games before the end of the month, and the Dutchman will be keen to avoid any further injuries if possible.

Christian Eriksen may be handed a well-earned rest after a busy period, with Scott McTominay or Fred in line to replace him.

Brazilian star Casemiro could also drop back down to the bench as Ten Hag strives to carefully manage his first team minutes.

The 30-year-old made his league debut against Everton on Sunday and steadily grew into the game after struggling in the early exchanges.

There is still plenty more to come from the former Real Madrid midfielder, but he may be held back for the league game against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Tyrell Malacia could get the nod at left-back ahead of Luke Shaw, while Jadon Sancho will be eager to start after being left on the bench against the Toffees.

Sancho has struggled to produce his best form this season but will be chomping at the bit to showcase his talents against Omonia.

A victory on Thursday would put United in pole position to progress to the knockout phase, and they should get the job done without too much difficulty.

They will undoubtedly have one eye on live soccer streams of the game between Sociedad and Sheriff and will be hoping that the visitors can frustrate their Spanish hosts.
