Erik ten Hag provides positive injury update on five key defenders

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided a positive injury update on five defenders ahead of the Premier League meeting against Burnley at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils will be eyeing a second successive league win this afternoon. Ahead of the game, Ten Hag has already confirmed that Mason Mount is available for selection.

In his Q&A session with Manutd.com, the Dutchman has now revealed that Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw will resume team training with the club in the near future.

The 54-year-old added that Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are also not too far away and could be available during the final weeks of the campaign.

He said: “I think so and, some players, they return now on the pitch. Licha Martinez, Luke Shaw. Also, I don’t think Victor Lindelof is too far away, as is Rapha Varane.”

“So, yeah, there are players returning. Jonny Evans, I don’t want to forget him so, yeah, there are players returning and I think that’s what we need when we go into the last tough weeks of the season.”

United have been hampered by multiple injury blows this season. The defensive injuries have contributed to the club’s lack of stability at the back in recent months.

The Red Devils are almost out of contention for Champions League football, but they must focus on winning their remaining games to qualify for the Europa League.

The club also have a huge FA Cup final against arch-rivals Manchester City on May 25. Ten Hag will want his key defenders available in time for the Wembley showdown.

The manager may ideally look to reintroduce them on the field in the final weeks of the league campaign such that they are prepared for the big challenge in London.
