Erik ten Hag must trust Sofyan Amrabat in defensive midfield vs Liverpool after Casemiro injury blow

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag must trust Sofyan Amrabat in the defensive midfield role in today’s FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool.

The Red Devils have picked up several injuries over the campaign. They have suffered another big setback ahead of the North-West derby at Old Trafford.

The Brazil Football Confederation have confirmed that Casemiro will miss their upcoming international friendlies after picking up an injury at his club.

This is a huge blow for the Red Devils and in our opinion, the manager must trust Amrabat in the number six role in the absence of the 32-year-old ace.

Amrabat started alongside Kobbie Mainoo in the 0-0 draw at Anfield earlier this term. The Moroccan had a tough start to the game as he was easily dispossessed.

However, he grew in confidence as the match progressed and made some quality clearances.

With Casemiro sidelined, he looks the best option to be paired alongside Mainoo. Scott McTominay has lacked the defensive concentration when required.

The same can be said about Christian Eriksen, who may struggle against Liverpool’s high press.

Mason Mount is an option for Ten Hag, but he could be introduced off the bench, considering he has been out of competitive action for four months.

Hence, Amrabat looks the most natural replacement for Casemiro in the centre of the park.

The £65,000-a-week star has had a disappointing loan stint from Fiorentina. United seem unlikely to trigger the buy option in his loan contract as things stand.

The club’s stance may not change ahead of the summer, but Amrabat has the chance to prove his credentials with a stand-out showing against Liverpool.
