Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has given the go-ahead to sign Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos during the summer transfer window, according to AS.
The Red Devils are expected to pursue a marquee striker in the summer and they have been linked with several high-profile names over the past few months.
Ramos has been one of those and it is now reported that United have shown the ‘most interest’ in signing him from Benfica at the end of the campaign.
It is added that Ten Hag has given the green light for the move, though a transfer could depend on whether the Glazers manage to sell the club.
The Glazers are currently evaluating offers for a permanent sale and AS hint that United may need fresh investment in order to afford the Portuguese.
Benfica are unlikely to sell Ramos for less than his €120 million release clause this summer.
Ramos would be a superb long-term striker for United
The 21-year-old has been in excellent form for Benfica this campaign, scoring 24 goals and providing 10 assists from 36 appearances in all competitions.
He was also brilliant for Portugal at the World Cup. Ramos netted a stellar hat-trick alongside an assist in the 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland in the round of 16.
Hence, his reputation is rising quickly and United will need to move fast to secure his services ahead of their European rivals in the next transfer window.
Ramos would be a superb long-term signing for the club. He is already a top-class striker who is strong with his hold-up and link-up play in the final third.
The Portuguese possesses an impressive work rate and likes to regularly press his opponents. He is also very mobile. This makes him tough to defend against.
Despite the positives, United’s move for him could depend on a change of ownership or the Glazers securing minority investment to boost the transfer budget.
