Erik ten Hag has been shocked by Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reportedly been shocked by the decline of Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek.

That’s according to The Sun who claim that despite Ten Hag’s concerns, he is convinced the 25-year-old can still play a key role at United.

The capped 19-capped Holland international joined United from Ajax back in the summer of 2020 for around £35 million (BBC). He has really struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford though.

Ten Hag knows all about Van de Beek. He managed him during his time in charge at Ajax. The Dutchman was in scintillating form for Ajax before he left to join United. He bagged 41 goals and 34 assists in 175 games for the Eredivisie outfit.

Van de Beek was the heartbeat of that Ajax side under Ten Hag and great things were expected of him at Old Trafford. He has flattered to deceive up to this point though, and it seems as though his manager has been surprised by his decline.

Van de Beek’s drastic decline and lack of confidence has shocked Ten Hag according to the Sun.

However, the United manager still believes that he can get the best out of the misfiring midfielder.

Playing him in his correct position would be a good start. He was at his best for Ajax when playing in a more attacking role. And if he is to succeed with United, he needs to be given more freedom to roam.

The onus is still on the Dutchman to perform of course, but he needs to be given the tools to help him do just that by Ten Hag.

This season will be a hugely important one for Van de Beek. And if he fails to make an impact under Ten Hag, his days at Old Trafford may well be numbered.
