Erik ten Hag hails two Manchester United players after the 4-1 win over Real Betis

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag raised Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes for their fine performances against Real Betis last night.

The Red Devils registered a comfortable 4-1 victory over the La Liga side in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag wanted a response after the horror show at Liverpool and his players delivered.

He told BT Sport after the game (via The Athletic), “It was a great attitude – we were good on the ball, made good switches and runs in behind and created a lot of chances.

“It is always good to see how the team reacts after a setback. This is not the first time this season we can reset and bounce back. This team has character, so big compliment to the team.

“For a striker (Weghorst) was so close so many times. He has already created chances and goals for others and he deserved his goal.

“Bruno Fernandes was fantastic. He led the team with his control of the game and passing and then he scored a goal.”

After missing several chances, Weghorst finally got his first Old Trafford goal. As soon as his strike found the back of the net, the Dutchman bursts into tears.

He was mobbed by his teammates who were delighted to see the 30-year-old score his first goal in front of the Stretford End.

Ten Hag started Bruno Fernandes on the left flank against Liverpool and the midfielder failed to have a positive impact on the game.

The 28-year-old operated in a more central area against Betis. He constantly switched between the number 8 and 10 positions with Fred.

His assist was a simple one, with Antony doing the hard work by netting a world-class strike. He made a great run to the near post to head home Luke Shaw’s corner.

Man United next face Premier League strugglers Southampton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
