Erik ten Hag eager to work with Cristiano Ronaldo at Man Utd

Incoming Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is eager to work with Cristiano Ronaldo next season, according to The Mirror.

The Dutch tactician terminated his contract with Ajax earlier today. He has confirmed that he will be joining United from tomorrow.

It is unclear whether Ten Hag will be in the dug-out for the Crystal Palace game, but appears to have a clear plan for Ronaldo next term.

The 52-year-old has told his close friends that he would like to work with the £31.5 million-rated star and wants him to stay at the club.

Our view:

Ronaldo’s return last summer came out of the blue, but he has definitely lived up to his expectations with 24 goals across all competitions.

There were questions whether he could adapt to Ralf Rangnick’s high pressing style earlier this year, but he has done so with good effect.

Aside from his goal contributions, Ronaldo has shown the eagerness to drop into deeper attacking positions while also helping out defensively.

This attributes will have impressed Ten Hag, who has worked with an out-and-out striker in Sebastien Haller over the past 18 months.

Hence, the Dutchman could stick with Ronaldo up front next term, but may want another new signing to provide strong competition for places.

Ten Hag generally prefers to deploy a 4-3-3 formation, but injuries at Ajax saw him play with a front two towards the end of their campaign.

A two-man strike partnership could be an option for United going forward. It could bring the best out of Ronaldo, who is more fond to the set-up from his Juventus days and the backend of his Real Madrid career.
