Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hinted that Mason Mount could play a role from the bench against his former club Chelsea.
The Red Devils visit Stamford Bridge on Thursday to face the London outfit in the Premier League. Ten Hag has indicated the role Mount could play.
He said (via ManUtd.com): “He is a fantastic football player but it is important, first, that he is getting and keeping fit because he has had three injuries, as we have seen now with Licha [Lisandro Martinez].
“You always want to avoid [this], so we have to do this very carefully and so that is the first objective, to keep him fit.
“At the same time, we want to use him so that he can have benefit and contribute to the team, like he did on Saturday, where he had an impact.”
Mason Mount could play a vital role from the bench
Mount will be hoping for a fairytale return on Thursday against his former club.
He will also be high in confidence, considering he opened his goalscoring account for the Red Devils against Brentford on Saturday.
The midfielder produced an excellent finish from inside the area in injury time after replacing Marcus Rashford in the 80th minute.
His debut season with United has been marred by injuries, but he will be hoping for a solid finish to the campaign.
United fans will also hope that their £60 million summer signing could show glimpses of how important he could be for them next term.
Ten Hag may bring Mount on in the second half for a midfielder if United are not in a winning position.
United need a victory as they are languishing behind in the top-four race. A victory over Chelsea would move them eight points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
