Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Mason Mount picked up a knock during the 3-0 Premier League loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils suffered a damaging defeat to Spurs at home last weekend. Mount replaced Kobbie Mainoo before the half-time interval, but he was substituted in the second half.
It was initially revealed that the midfielder was taken off with a head injury, but the manager has now confirmed that the Englishman also picked up a knock during the game.
He told Manutd.com: “He had a head injury and picked up a knock so they are the two reasons why he’s not available for tomorrow.”
Mount has had a tough start to his United career. He was hampered by multiple injuries last season and registered only 756 minutes across 20 appearances in all competitions.
The 25-year-old managed to come out of pre-season without any setbacks, but he picked up a fresh hamstring issue after just two games in the ongoing campaign for United.
Ten Hag has now revealed that Mount was left out of the squad with a knock aside from his head injury. Hopefully, he will recover in time for the Aston Villa game on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Luke Shaw is recovering from a calf problem sustained last month. When asked about him, Ten Hag added: “We hope Luke Shaw can return after the international break quickly.
“I don’t know if it’s the first game, we’re hoping for [it], but I can’t, in this moment, tell this with 100 per cent security.”
In our view, Ten Hag may handle Shaw with extra caution and he could be eased back into the starting XI.
United will be aiming to end a three-match winless run against Porto in the Europa League tomorrow.
It could be a crucial game for Ten Hag’s future. The manager needs a significant upturn in form over the next two games or he could be sacked during the international break.
