Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has provided an injury update on four players ahead of the Premier League clash against Luton Town on Sunday evening.
The Red Devils registered a third-straight league win last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on the road. Scott McTominay scored a late winner off the bench.
In the same game, Luke Shaw was substituted at the half-time interval as he had some complaints. Ten Hag acknowledged that he did not want to take a risk with him.
Speaking in today’s press conference, the manager said that Shaw remains doubtful for the weekend, but he is positive that the left-back will return in time to face Luton.
He told Manutd.com: “Yes, so he is doubtful for the weekend but we are positive he can make it.”
“So, he fell out [of the game], it was a precaution [to substitute him] and I think it was the right decision, especially when you, afterwards, win the game. But we are working to Sunday.”
The Dutch tactician added that Aaron Wan-Bissaka will take ‘some weeks’ to return, having picked up a fresh injury during a training session before the Villa encounter.
Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia are also expected to remain on the sidelines. Ten Hag revealed that the duo will take ‘some more weeks’ to make their respective comebacks.
He added: “First, Aaron Wan-Bissaka will take some weeks because he picked up another injury in the training last week. Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia will take some more weeks.”
United have found momentum with four successive wins in all competitions. Three of those have come in the top-flight and the club are now closer to the Champions League places.
The Red Devils are currently six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur while they are five points adrift of fifth-placed Aston Villa. The fans will expect another win on Sunday.
The fifth spot could also be enough to qualify for the Champions League if the remaining English teams go into the latter stages of the European competitions and win some silverware.
For this weekend, Ten Hag will be hoping to have the services of Shaw. The club looked vulnerable from the left-back position after Victor Lindelof replaced the Englishman at Villa Park.
Shaw’s return would bring stability in the role, but Ten Hag will be cautious with him, considering his injury record. The £33 million-rated star could play about an hour before being replaced.
