Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal Mejbri have had their contracts extended for another 12 months.
Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof and Mejbri were due to enter the final six months of their contracts in January, but the Red Devils have now triggered the extension clauses to keep them until June 2025.
However, the hierarchy have decided against activating the same for Varane and Martial. Speaking in his press conference today, Ten Hag revealed the reason behind the decisions.
He told Manutd.com: “We are talking with Rapha Varane and with Anthony Martial. And we have triggered the options on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal.”
“[on Varane & Martial] I think that is an internal discussion between the club and the player.”
United have big decisions to make over Varane & Martial
Varane has been in-and-out of the starting line-up this campaign. There was a phase where he was regularly on the bench with the manager preferring Harry Maguire over him.
The Frenchman managed to win over Ten Hag with a man of the match display against Liverpool and he has since been a regular in the XI, barring the West Ham game where he was ill.
Despite this, there is speculation over his future with the likes of Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Victor Lindelof expected to return from their respective injuries very soon.
Varane has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia today for €30 million. It is left to be seen whether the centre-back could be sold. The club would require a replacement in that case.
Meanwhile, Martial is also likely to head for the exit door. The forward has failed to live up to the expectations and could be sold this month if a new centre-forward is signed.
Bayern striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could replace the former Monaco ace this winter.
