Manchester United held Liverpool to a goalless draw at Anfield on Sunday to secure a hard-fought point against all odds.
Many people had tipped the Red Devils to suffer heavy defeat at the hands of the Merseysiders having lost 7-0 at the same ground when they met last time out in March.
However, Man United produced a solid defensive performance, with Cameroon international goalkeeper Andre Onana keeping his eighth clean sheet in his 25th appearance across all competitions this term.
Former Red Devils goalie Edwin van der Sar was impressed with the 27-year-old’s performance against Liverpool, taking to Instagram to shower praise on him.
Onana has largely struggled since joining Man United from Inter Milan in the summer as David de Gea’s replacement, making plenty of errors leading to goals.
However, he was in impeccable form against the Reds, making eight saves – the most by a Man United goalkeeper without conceding a goal since De Gea against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2019.
He also completed the most passes (30) of any Man United player against the high-pressing Reds, claiming after the game that he was not fazed by the famous Anfield atmosphere.
Onana had 57 touches, completed 17 long balls, and five of his saves were from shots inside the box.
The Red Devils face West Ham United, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest in their remaining Premier League games in 2023. They can win all those matches if their goalkeeper replicates his heroics.
Man United are seventh in the table after 17 games, with six points between them and the Champions League places.
They must start winning league games consistently if they want to play in Europe’s elite competition next term.
Manager Erik ten Hag will now hope that Onana and others can start performing consistently well having seen the form of his stars fluctuate this term.
