Edinson Cavani claims he turned down approaches from two Serie A clubs to join Manchester United

Uruguay international Edinson Cavani has claimed that he rejected approaches from Italian clubs Juventus and Inter Milan to join Manchester United in the summer.

The 33-year-old joined the Red Devils on a free transfer after the expiration of his contract with Ligue 1 giants PSG.

The experienced striker has been impressive for the Manchester side so far, scoring three goals and creating an assist in six appearances in the Premier League. He struck two crucial goals at Southampton after leaving the bench in the second half to play an important role in the 3-2 win for United.

In a recent interview with Mondo Napoli, the veteran striker admitted that he snubbed approaches from many Italian clubs due to his love for Napoli where he spent three years.

He said: “I will always be grateful to them [Napoli fans]. It is for this reason that I said no to many Italian clubs including Juventus, who called me often, and also Inter.

“I couldn’t make such a gesture to the Neapolitans. If I think of Naples I think of joy, because I know that I have done so much for them and they continue to pay homage to me with all this.”

Cavani started his career at Danubio before joining Italian side Palermo in 2007. He joined Napoli in the summer of 2010, initially on a loan deal which was later made permanent for a €17million fee. His stint at Stadio San Paolo was highly successful as he won the Coppa Italia there and struck 104 goals in 138 total appearances.

His incredible performances in the Serie A attracted the attention of PSG who spent a record €64 million to secure his services.

The Uruguayan footballer won several trophies at the Parc des Princes before falling behind Mbappe and Neymar in the pecking order and signed on a free transfer with the Red Devils in the summer transfer window.
