Early team news ahead of Everton trip

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime with a trip to Everton.

The Red Devils will be looking to bounce back from the disappointing 2-1 defeat away to Instanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig in the first two matches had put United in a good position, but the result saw them joined by the Geman club at the top of Group H.

The players will have little time to reflect on the defeat as they fly back to Manchester just days before travelling to former Premier League leaders Everton this weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side had won all four of their games before the international break, but have failed to do so in their three since.

They were fortunate to take a point in the Merseyside derby before losing at Southampton and Newcastle United in their last two outings.

The Toffees have had a full week to prepare for this weekend’s encounter, while United have been flying around Europe.

A victory would likely move United up a couple of places in the table, but they cannot end the weekend in the top half.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rotated his team in Turkkey, so David de Gea should be fresh to return between the sticks in place of Dean Henderson.

However, Alex Telles, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are out indefinitely, while Victor Lindelof can be considered a doubt as he didn’t travel due to a bad back.

That means the same back four that started midweek could face Everton at Goodison Park too – Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.

Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic were handed rare starts in Istanbul, and although the latter could start this one, it is more likely to be Fred and Scott McTominay.

Paul Pogba must also be in contention as he only featured from the bench, whilst Bruno Fernandes is expected to start.

Anthony Martial has completed his three-match domestic ban and should continue up front after scoring in the Champions League, whilst Marcus Rashford should keep his place down the left.

Mason Greenwood could come in on the right, which would see Juan Mata drop out of the starting XI. Jesse Lingard is still out of contention.
