The COVID-19 pandemic took a big hit on the economy. The majority of businesses took a toll on their financial statements. Borussia Dortmund did too.
The German club posted a €43.9m loss for the 2019-20 financial year.
“The entire past decade has been very good, both athletically and economically,” said chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke. Dortmund became debt free a couple of years ago and posted a net profit of €17.4m in the 2018-19 financial year.
“In economic terms, we have always written black numbers in these years. Then coronavirus came.”
“We will only be in the black again if we have no restrictions on the crowds,” he said. “But we have to be patient.
“Football is extremely difficult to imagine without fans. That is how long we have to hold out. That is how long we will hold out.“
According to Kicker, Dortmund were set to make a €6m profit at the end of FY 2019-20. However, the club suffered lost €15m from match day revenue as five home games were to be played behind closed doors.
Dortmund signed young English talent Jude Belligham for €25m- making him the most expensive 17-year-old football player.
There has been a shift in Dortmund’s transfer policy recently with them singing the likes of Erling Haaland, Julian Brandt, Nico Schulz and Thorgan Hazard in one window. It suggests Dortmund have the financial backing and are not going to be bullied by big clubs take advantage of their current situation.
As aforementioned, they are debt free and with future looking so bright, taking loans wouldn’t be difficult for them.
Earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Dortmund will only sell the player if Manchester United will submit a bid of €120m.
Given United’s behavior in the market, they are unhappy with Dortmund playing a hardball. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggested they are not going to sign ‘marquee’ players. But, United need Sancho. He is the best young winger available in the market.
Dortmund’s losses don’t change anything for United. If United wants to sign Sancho, they have to pay €120m.
Can United afford Sancho? Yes. They have financial backing but it would significantly reduce the budget decided for strengthening other positions.
