Manchester United have been linked with Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong over the past few months but the new contract for Diogo Dalot could end the speculation.
Dalot, 24, started the season as an undisputed choice at right-back ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka but the latter has been a consistent starter for the Red Devils since the World Cup break.
Erik ten Hag recently heaped praise on Wan-Bissaka for his excellent form in 2023 and it is quite clear that the 25-year-old won’t be leaving the club during the summer transfer window.
Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that Dalot is on the verge of penning a new long-term contract and in our view, this should end the ongoing transfer saga involving Frimpong.
Frimpong has had a superb season at Leverkusen, scoring nine goals and 11 assists. The Dutchman has primarily operated from the right wing-back position for Xabi Alonso’s side.
It has been reported that Leverkusen value him in the region of £40-50 million but it is highly unlikely that United will make such a huge outlay while keeping Wan-Bissaka and Dalot.
Hence, Dalot’s deal should put an end to the Frimpong chase. United could be better off spending the sum on a marquee striker, central midfielder and a central defender this summer.
Harry Kane, Mason Mount and Kim Min-jae look to be the prime targets for the Red Devils manager and that would represent a solid transfer window. Hopefully, the business will be done early.
Qualification for the Champions League has ensured that United receive at least £60m in TV money alone. They could get more than £100m in revenue with sponsorship bonuses included.
Hence, there is no reason for the Glazers to not spend big if they decide against a transfer of ownership. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim remain interested in purchasing the club.
