Dimitar Berbatov says 22-year-old Man United star can be a future captain

Manchester United favourite Dimitar Berbatov has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford and believes the England international has the credentials to be a future captain of the club.

Rashford, 22, has amassed nearly 200 appearances for the Red Devils since his debut in 2016 and during this period, he has contributed 55 goals and has established himself as a regular with the Three Lions.

Despite this, he has not been talked about as a leader of the team and the focus has lied on the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Scott McTominay for the captaincy role in the future.

Speaking on Betfair, Berbatov acknowledged that Rashford is still at the early phase of his career but believes he has garnered sufficient experience to lead the team at some point of time.

“He is still so young and no doubt he will be on the radar of a few other clubs, but I see him as a typical born and bred Manchester United player, someone who can carry the torch for academy players coming through at United, to show that it can be done. He is the prime example and he can still go further, maybe one day he can be the captain,” he told.

In recent times, Rashford has undoubtedly been the most successful player to come out of the academy and he has performed better this term, having reached the 10-goal mark after just 18 games.

Still, the forward has plenty of room for improvement and he needs to find the consistency in his performances over the course of an entire season, which has not been the case so far.

Being the club-captain is surely the biggest dream for any United graduate, but Rashford will need to lead by example with regular goalscoring contributions in order to stake a claim for the same.
