Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, with Kristoffer Ajer’s 99th-minute equaliser cancelling out Mason Mount’s 96th-minute opener.
The Red Devils were the second-best team against the Bees, and the England international midfielder thought he had grabbed a late winner for his side, only for the hosts to snatch a point at the death.
Mount made a cameo appearance in the 4-3 FA Cup win over Liverpool a fortnight ago, but he was afforded tangible playing minutes yesterday.
He replaced Marcus Rashford in the 80th minute, which was his first major appearance for Man United since the 1-0 victory over Luton Town last November.
His ninth Premier League outing for the Red Devils since joining them from Chelsea last summer yielded a crucial point as he finally opened his goalscoring account for his new club.
Declan Rice and Tammy Abraham were pleased for Mount, taking to Instagram to comment after he posted his post-match reaction on the social media platform.
The result was not good enough to keep Man United’s top-four hopes alive, as they are now 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
They are eight points adrift of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, but having Mount back is one of the few positives from the game.
The Red Devils were below par, but having the former Blues star available could give them a much-needed boost ahead of their final nine league games.
They also have the FA Cup to fight for, and Mount and the other players returning from injuries could help Erik ten Hag’s side finish the campaign on a high.
