Dean Henderson is leaving Sheffield United after spending two years with the Blades. Henderson confirmed it via an Instagram post.
In his first year, he helped Sheffield earn a promotion back to the Premier League. Henderson helped Sheffield take the league by storm in his second season finishing in the top 10.
This could mean two things for Manchester United:
Henderson stays at Manchester United
Henderson could stay at Old Trafford and battle out with David de Gea for the #1 spot. However, it is not fruitful for the player as Henderson is in a superb form and deserves the maximum minutes and not warm United’s bench.
United’s current second-choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero is second to none too. It is unhealthy for United to keep hold of three world-class goalkeepers and it suggests that the resources are not utilized efficiently.
Rumours surround that United could offer Romero to Aston Villa and lower Villa’s asking price for Jack Grealish. This will make Henderson get more game time but still not enough for a player of his quality.
Henderson leaves on loan
The most ideal option will be to let Henderson go temporarily on loan. Clubs like Chelsea are in dire need of a goal-keeper and they’ve made contact with Henderson. [source: Daily Mail]
However, it is highly unlikely United will loan him to a direct rival. There will not be a shortage of clubs who would like to include Henderson in their plans.
This is the best option for United if Romero doesn’t leave. And for Henderson too. It will buy more time to United to analyse de Gea’s poor run and make a shrewd decision.
United are not looking to sell de Gea this window after renewing his contract last season and rightly so as the Spaniard is the club’s best player this decade.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer commented about the goal-keeping situation in a very diplomatic manner.
“Competition for places is good. It’ll be difficult to keep three of them at the club. So we’ll see what the decision will be there.
“We have Dean, Sergio and David at the moment in the ranks. Lee (Grant), the fantastic professional he is, backing them up. But it’ll be difficult obviously to keep three of them at the club, so we’ll see what the decision will be there.”
It suggests that the Red Devils are looking to offload at least one goal-keeper. Let us wait and see who it will be.
