The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that Manchester United are not close to landing the signature of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon and there is a ‘realistic possibility’ that the club could sign no one before the transfer deadline.
A recent report from The Times claimed that United had made an improved offer for the Portuguese playmaker where they would be prepared to pay an initial £46.4m to push through the transfer before the end of the month.
However, that story has now been dismissed by Ornstein, who has stated that a deal is ‘wide of the mark’ and any breakthrough in the negotiations would depend on Sporting’s accepting the proposed offer over their asking price.
The reputed journalist added that there could be the realistic possibility that United conclude the transfer window with no signings, considering they are not close to purchasing any player for the moment.
At the beginning of the year, there was much anticipation over the business the club could conduct during the transfer window, given the need for a creative midfielder and an experienced centre-forward.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has regularly stated that there are funds to spend but things are looking gloomy at present with the club yet to strengthen the squad with any new recruit.
Obviously, the hierarchy have been reluctant to pay more than their estimated prices for their transfer targets but that strategy has gone wrong with no signings yet ahead of Friday’s 11pm deadline.
