There was a time after Manchester United acquired the Champions League spot by beating Leicester City 2-0 on the last day of the Premier League 2019-20 campaign when it seemed as if the oath of Jadon Sancho making a move to Manchester United had already been written on the walls.
Manchester United and Jadon Sancho certainly started looking like a bond made in heaven.
The 20-year-old Englishman was thought to be the new household name for the Stretford enders, United’s fresh No.07, and an apparent superstar who would fill the void on the Red Devils’ right-wing.
But with a nearly two-and-a-half month of transfer period gone, that desired moment never arrived.
According to a very reliable face in British football media, David Ornstein, Borussia Dortmund’s asking price and United’s reluctance to make some firm movements at the initial stage were the two major reasons behind United’s failure in attaining the services of the English winger.
Speaking to Tifo Podcast, Ornstein clarified Manchester United were adamant to sign a right-winger from the summer transfer window, and their no.1 target was Jadon Sancho.
Sancho, on the other hand, wanted to join Manchester United, determining his desire privately to embark on a new chapter of what has been a spectacular footballing career for the former Manchester City man so far.
Borussia Dortmund had given Manchester United a deadline day of 10th August, an ultimatum to reach an agreement with the club regarding the Sancho deal.
But Manchester United chose not to contact Dortmund then as they were believingly sure that a deal of this high magnitude could never have such a condition like an ultimatum.
Had Manchester United gone with Sancho’s asking price of €120 million to Dortmund before 10th August, United would have got their long-term target, as per David Ornstein.
Man United kept on thinking that Dortmund would accept a bid at the latter part of the summer transfer market, while Dortmund stuck to their perception that they won’t sell Sancho anymore as the 10th August deadline was long gone.
On the backyard, United were supposed to have started searching for Sancho’s alternatives. As Ornstein further claimed, there was a general understanding that Dortmund would have accepted a bid had the offer been something around €120-140 million.
But considering the financial turmoil imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, spending that much cash on one player was never question in the mind of the Glazers and Ed Woodward.
And United kept on waiting all summer, only to make a bid of £91.3m in the dying stages of the transfer window. The respective offer also got rejected by Dortmund as Sancho put stay at Germany for at least another season.
The England-based journalist further mentioned that some sources close to the Mancunian club think that the Reds Devils could have done much more in the transfer window.
Having spent in the region of £200 million since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got the managerial job, Manchester United have had added more quantities than qualities to their roster, Ornstein understood.
Furthermore, the deadline day acquisition of Edinson Cavani, Manchester United’s new no.7, has been labelled as a ‘panic buy’.
