David de Gea reveals his top five games so far

Earlier today, David de Gea featured on the Manchester United YouTube channel and revealed his top five games in the United shirt.

#5 Manchester United vs Everton (2014-15) at Old Trafford

United won the game 2-1 as David de Gea helped save a penalty off Leighton Baines in the first half of the game.  Everton’s Bryan Oviedo, who scored the winner in 2013-14 season against United was denied another heroic goal by de Gea’s vital stoppage-time save. The Spaniard also helped United alert Leon Osman’s late efforts to equalize. Although Angel di Maria scored the opening goal and set Radamael Falcao for the second, de Gea was in limelight for making multiple goal-saving saves.

#4 Arsenal vs Manchester United (2017-18) at Emirates

This game witnessed one of the best goalkeeping performances in the Premier League. David de Gea made 14 saves in the game, the joint-most in a Premier League game since 2003-04. Even Arsene Wenger was frustarted with de Gea’s goal-denying saves. United won the game 2-1 but Arsenal could have easily scored more if it were not for de Gea. Arsneal took a total of 33 shots during the game, something unusual for a Jose Mourinho side but de Gea took matters in his own hands and won three points for the Reds.

#3 Manchester United vs Liverpool (2014-15) at Old Trafford

David de Gea started the game with an injured finger from a training session a day before the game. But, United versus Liverpool games are always a treat for anyone and is un-missable. The 29-year-old accepts he took some painkillers and injection to get rid of the pain. He was awarded the Man of the Match and pulled United out of clear cut chances off Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli. United won 3-0 to defeat Liverpool and despite Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie scored a goal each but it was de Gea who helped United keep a clean sheet against the Merseyside club.

#2 Real Madrid vs Manchester United (2012-13) at Santiago Bernabeu

This game is memorable for wrong reasons. United were robbed a chance to go forward with a controversial red card to Nani. United lost the game 1-2 and de Gea’s performances were not as jaw-dropping as it was in the aforementioned games but it remains a favourite for the former Atletico Madrid man because he was playing at Santiago Bernabeu. Real converted 16 shots on target but thanks to de Gea United conceded only two goals.

#1 Spurs vs Manchester United (2018-19) at Wembley stadium

This game was another masterstroke by de Gea in the Premier League. After making 14 saves (most) against Arsenal in the 2017-18 season, he made another record making 11 saves against Tottenham in the 2018-19 season. He denied the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Toby Alderwireld a chance to snatch three points off United. Eight out of his 11 saves came in the second half and de Gea single handedly won three points for United, yet again.

We celebrate de Gea’s illustrious career where he’s made 400 appearances for the Reds. Certain rumours surround the club of his departure after his poor run in form. However, we all want him to make a comeback.

Form in temporary, class is permanent.”
