David de Gea ready to accept big pay-cut to sign long-term deal at Man Utd

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea is ready to accept a big pay-cut on his current £375,000-a-week salary to sign a new long-term contract.

The Spaniard’s position came under scrutiny at the start of the season following unconvincing displays against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

However, the 32-year-old has since been exceptional between the sticks with outstanding saves. He had a howler in the FA Cup third round against Everton but United were on the winning side.

According to The Sun, United have now taken the option of triggering the 12-month extension clause on his contract which was due to expire in June this year.

It is added that De Gea is hoping for a three-year extension . He is said to be eyeing security rather than holding the club to ransom and would accept a big pay-cut.

The Spaniard’s wages could be reduced by more than 25 per cent with a fresh renewal.

Man Utd must keep world-class De Gea for the long-term

De Gea had a tough start to the season and there were suggestions that he would not suit manager Erik ten Hag, who likes goalkeepers with more mobility in the box.

However, the former Atletico Madrid graduate has shown signs of improvement. There has been more willingness to pass out from the back with better precision.

The Spaniard is still reluctant to make high claims in the box, but he is a world-class goalkeeper with terrific reflexes. He has earned plenty of praise from the manager.

Hence, it appears a no-brainer to keep him for the next few seasons. Ten Hag has given his full backing to De Gea and it may not be long before fresh terms are agreed.

De Gea, who was described as ‘magnificent‘ by Ten Hag earlier this season, could have a big part to play today as United aim to beat runaway leaders Arsenal on the road.
