David de Gea hints at new Manchester United contract

David de Gea has said that he feels at home in Manchester and does not see himself leaving United during the back end of his playing career.

De Gea has been in sensational form between the sticks this term. He has single-handedly won points for the club in the Premier League and Champions League.

The 31-year-old will be in action against former club Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday. Ahead of the game, De Gea has said that he is happy in Manchester.

The shot-stopper added that he loves the Red Devils’ faithful and the city and hinted he would prefer to spend the rest of his professional career with the Mancunian giants.

He told UEFA.com: “I like the fact I was born in Madrid, but at the end of the day, it’s just a city.

“Now I feel as if I’m from Manchester – I just feel like anyone else from Manchester.”

“Where you are loved and welcomed is your home. I’ve been here for many years and, obviously, anything can happen in life, in the world of football, but honestly, I don’t see myself away from Manchester United.”

Our view:

Questions were raised over the Spaniard’s future last term where he made several errors. He has redeemed himself this season with countless stand-out performances.

He is currently contracted to United until June 2023, but the club have the option to extend his £375,000-per-week contract for another 12 months with a clause inserted.

That appears a no-brainer at the moment, but the hierarchy are already planning to extend his contract while offering him the same salary.

Judging by De Gea’s recent interview, it could be a straightforward decision for both him and the club.

The £16.2 million-rated star deserves a new deal, having recaptured his old form after a couple of tough seasons.
