Cristiano Ronaldo to wear the No 7 shirt at Manchester United

Manchester United have confirmed via their official website that Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the No 7 shirt on his return to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo wore this number during his initial spell with the Red Devils.

He was United’s No 7 from 2003 to 2009, before making his move to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo made a shock return to Old Trafford as the club announced his arrival from Juventus on Tuesday.

It was unclear which number he would wear, with Edinson Cavani the man in possession of the number 7 jersey.

However, the Premier League have given dispensation for Ronaldo to take the No 7, with Cavani switching to the No 21 he wears with Uruguay.

Ronaldo said: “I wasn’t sure if it would be possible to have the number seven shirt again.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to Edi for this incredible gesture.”

Several players have worn the No 7 shirt since Ronaldo’s departure in 2009, but none have had the same impact as the Portuguese forward.

Clubs are not normally allowed to change numbers once the season starts, but the Premier League’s decision makes total sense.

United and the league will benefit commercially from the link-up with the CR7 brand, while there is plenty of appeal in Cavani switching to No 21.

With the club refunding anyone who has bought a Cavani No 7 shirt this season, the switch is undoubtedly a no-brainer.

Ronaldo is expected to wear the iconic jersey against Newcastle United at Old Trafford on September 11.
