Confirmed Lineups: Man Utd vs CSKA Moscow

Manchester United are in Russia this evening for our second group stage game of this season’s Champions League.

Tonight’s opponents were 2-1 winners at Benfica in their opening game, so avoiding defeat would ensure we head into next month top of the group.

The two teams for this evening’s game are confirmed as:

Manchester United

David de Gea; Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind; Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera; Henrikh Mkhitaryan; Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku

Substitutes: Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Axel Tuanzebe, Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford

Jose has gone with three centre-backs this evening as Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling all start. It looks as though Ashley Young and Daley Blind will play wingback roles, though the latter did play a holding midfield role in his final days at Ajax.  Ashley Young captains the side in Moscow.

Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera both start in central midfield.  Henrikh Mkhitaryan could be playing the number 10 role with both Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku up front.

CSKA Moscow

Igor Akinfeev; Mario Fernandes, Viktor Vasin, Vasili Berezutskiy, Alexei Berezutskiy, Georgi Shchennikov; Pontus Wernbloom, Aleksandr Golovin, Alen Dzagoev; Aaron Olonare, Vitinho

Substitutes: Ilya Pomazun, Sergei Ignashevich, Georgi Milanov, Bibras Natcho, Konstantin Kuchaev, Fydor Chalov, Timur Zhamaletdinov.

It appears Viktor Goncharenko has gone with the successful 3-1-4-2 formation which was victorious in Portugal a fortnight ago.  Mario Fernandes and Georgi Shchennikov will play the wingback roles.  Fernandes, who starts on the right-hand side of defence despite suffering a concussion in the weekend’s 0-0 draw with Dynamo Moscow.

Pontus Wernbloom is the only holding midfielder in the starting XI.  Aleksandr Golovin is a central midfielder but more attack-minded than defensive – he partners the Swede.  Golovin will be fresh after missing the Moscow derby at the weekend through suspension.  In front of them is Alan Dzagoev, who was one of the stars in the group stages of Euro 2012 but hasn’t gone onto big things since.

Aaron Olonare and Vitinho are the two strikers.  Vitinho is CSKA’s top scorer domestically with three goals.  The Brazilian scored their opener at Benfica before Timur Zhamaletdinov came off the bench to score the winner.  Aaron Olonare has one goal domestically.
