Manchester United are at relegated Huddersfield Town on Sunday where anything less than three points will end all hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and has given a team news and injury update.
It had already been confirmed earlier in the week that the knee injury picked up by Eric Bailly in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw has ruled him out for the final two games of the season as well as the Africa Cup of Nations tournament over the summer.
The boss told MUTV:
“Eric [Bailly] has probably been the one smiling the most out of all of us because you fear the worst. You fear the cruciate. You’re always worried that it might be nine or 12 months out, but we think he’ll be back for pre-season, so that’s positive.”
Teenager Mason Greenwood is also unavailable for us this weekend but could be fit in time to face Cardiff City on the final day of the season. The 17-year-old could have been in contention for a starting place at the John Smith’s Stadium on Sunday because Marcus Rashford is a doubt with a shoulder injury, though the England international has been in training this week.
Backup goalkeeper Sergio Romero tweaked his knee in training this week so Lee Grant can expect to be among the substitutes in Yorkshire this weekend.
On top of these three absentees, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia, Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku are all doubts to face Huddersfield with knocks they’ve picked up recently. Smalling, Jones and Lingard were all absent for our game against Chelsea last weekend.
Ole said:
”There are a few little niggles, so let’s count the numbers on Sunday morning, I reckon. Mason [Greenwood] started off this week training but then he’s out injured again, unfortunately.
“We were looking at bringing him into the squad for the last two games – maybe he’ll make the last one [against Cardiff].”
Antonio Valencia has been back in training this week, whilst youngsters Lee O’Connor, James Garner, Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong all trained with the first team.
