Manchester United might soon be looking to offload another veteran from their ranks, with reports claiming that the sale of Chris Smalling is edging closer to its to completion.
AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca has made it clear in his recent press conference that he expects the club to sort out the deal for Chris Smalling as quickly as possible, saying:
“I’m confident for Smalling, we’re working on it. He really wants to go back to Rome.
“I am in regular contact with Chris Smalling, I spoke to him yesterday. He wants to come back to Roma and we want to have him back. I think that there could be an update over the next few days.”
Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, Smalling has had a memorable professional career at United, having won two Premier Leagues, one FA Cup, one EFL Cup, three Community Shields, and one UEFA Europa League title — what has been his last taste of glory so far.
Having made 323 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions during these years, Smalling chose to leave and rejuvenate his career after losing his first-team place following the arrival of Harry Maguire.
In the last summer transfer window, Smalling secured his one-season loan move to AS Roma, where he did remarkably well, being a major part in gaining a Europa League spot for the team while guiding the flow of the match from the centre-back position. He appeared for them 37 times in total last season.
However, as per the reports hovering in the air, there is a significant difference regarding the value of the transfer between the clubs.
While United are demanding a fee of around £18m. AS Roma, on the other hand, are not ready to pay more than £16.3m for the England centre-half.
Smalling was also linked to a move to Inter and Newcastle United in the recent past.
It seems as if Smalling would finally get his desired move to Roma before the end of the summer transfer window.
