Chelsea vs Manchester United: Premier League preview, team news & predicted starting XI

Manchester United will face Chelsea this week as the Premier League campaign heats up.

The Blues have enjoyed a solid start to life under manager Graham Potter but were held to a goalless draw by Brentford in their last game.

United bounced back from their goalless draw against Newcastle United last weekend to pick up a dominant 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

The last four Premier League games in this fixture have ended in draws, and both sides will be eager to break the deadlock.

When and where will the game take place?

After three straight games on home turf, the Red Devils will head to Stamford Bridge for their game against Chelsea.

The game is set to be played on Saturday evening as one of four games slated for the day.

Match Preview

Chelsea

The home side have adapted to life under their new manager quite commendably, with resolute defending being the bedrock of their good run of form.

They played out a goalless draw against Brentford last time out to clinch a fifth consecutive clean sheet and seventh straight unbeaten outing.

However, the London club are winless in their last nine Premier League games against United and will be desperate to end that streak here but are without the services of Reece James and N’Golo Kante.

Conor Gallagher picked up an injury against the Bees and is not expected to feature on Saturday.

Manchester United

After a disappointing 0-0 draw against Newcastle last weekend, United produced their most dominant display under Erik ten Hag to record a 2-0 win over Tottenham last time out.

The Red Devils had 19 shots in the first half but were kept out by Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

They came out after the break with the same intensity and were soon rewarded with a goal from Fred before Bruno Fernandes doubled their advantage later on.

United are now unbeaten in their last five games and will head into the weekend clash with confidence.

The dominant showing at Old Trafford will undoubtedly leave Ten Hag with a selection dilemma. However, Harry Maguire, Donny van de Beek, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Anthony Martial are all unavailable due to injuries, while Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of the squad for the Chelsea game due to disciplinary reasons.

Players to watch – Aubameyang vs Martínez

While in charge at Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this season, Graham Potter masterminded a 2-1 win over United and will be looking to employ similar tactics this weekend.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was rested for the game at Brentford and could return to the starting XI against United to play the role Danny Welbeck did for the Seagulls on opening day – a striker with the willingness to press high.

Lisandro Martínez has come up against various forwards since he arrived in Manchester. He has, however, struggled against tall opposition and will have the same task on his hand on Saturday.

United have not conceded any goals in their last three matches and will have to keep the Gabonese forward at bay in their quest for a fourth straight clean sheet.
