Germany international Timo Werner allegedly rejected the chance to join Manchester United from Chelsea.
That’s according to a report from BILD journalist Christian Falk who claims that United held talks with the Chelsea forward before he eventually chose to return to RB Leipzig instead.
Werner, 26, has returned to Leipzig on a four-year deal for a fee believed to be worth around £25 million (Sky Sports).
United boss Erik ten Hag’s need for a top-class forward has now reached the desperation stage. Cristiano Ronaldo faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford whilst doubts remain as to whether Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford are good enough to lead the line for United.
It seems as though Ten Hag tried his best to bolster his options at Old Trafford but came up empty-handed.
Timo Werner rejected Manchester United move
The German has returned to his former club Leipzig after failing to establish himself in the Premier League with Chelsea.
Perhaps a move to the Bundesliga is the right one for him. His failures in England do beg the question of why United tried to sign him in the first place though.
There is a clear lack of direction, strategy and proper planning from the United recruitment team this summer. It’s why Manchester City and Liverpool are so far ahead at the moment.
Hopefully, Erik ten Hag can change all of that over time. United trying to sign players like Timo Werner certainly is the wrong way to go.
Hopefully, the Dutchman realises that now because if he doesn’t, it could be a long and painful season ahead.
